Spent the a week in Edinburgh. On Thursday had an evening in Whistle Binkies where I managed to watch three bands play. Managed to get some photographs of them as well. The bands of course were all rock bands and played some excellent music. music.

Entity Beans

Filed under: music, work — Steve @ 8:38 am

Oh woe is me! I had to update an Entity Bean in some Java code. Must be several years since I have done that. Last time was when I used Visual Age for Java. So now not only was I adding a new property to an entity bean, but I had to learn the tooling in Websphere Application Developer. I made absolutely sure I had a backup of my workspace before starting on this endeavour. Ah well it all went without hitch.

Out celebrating this success, and saw a band play at Whistle Binkies. Paranoid Monkeys are an experimental indie band. When they were playing it was actually quite good for a free band in a pub. The talk overs between the songs was a little odd. Extracts from Radio talks in the 50s and 60s about the atomic bomb and what you should do when it exploded. Well they were tongue in cheek, so I suppose were modern.

Whenever I phoned Rosemary I was told to ring back. She seemed to be entertaining friends until late at night.

Night out in Edinburgh

Filed under: Edinburgh, Uncategorized, music, restaurant review — Steve @ 2:00 am

After working all Saturday, decided to have a night out enjoying myself.  Started out with a meal at my favourite Thai Resturant and bar, The Mai Thai.  Had duck for my main course, not the usual spicy duck, but one cooked with tomatoes and pineapple.  It was an excellent change to my usual dish.

Then it was off to Whistle Binkies where I listened to a band called Roadhouse.  A 70s-80s cover band. Excellent renditions of Stefan Wolf, James Brown - Play that Funky Music White Man, Kinks - You Really Got Me  Going, AC/DC - Highway to Hell.  A few pints later it was back to bed, and then an earlyish bus to the airport.

I had to get through security by 09:00, so that I could set up to buy the tickets for Glastonbury.  Both Rosemary and I tried, but by 11.30 we got the message all sold out.  Never once in that time did Rosemary connect to the website.  Who were all these people who were succesful in buying tickets!!

Rob Heeney

Filed under: music — stephen @ 9:37 am

Today was cloudy, but no rain at least.  Met up with Ed Aldridge at Whistle Binkies for a pint, just inside happy hour.  Then full of indecision we decided on a venue to see a fringe show.  Decided on the Smirnoff Underbelly location on Cowgate for no other reason than it was nearest.  Next it was, what show?  Having just had a flier for a stand up comedian with an offer of 2 for 1, and starting in a few minutes, the decision was made.   So we saw Rob Heeney.  http://www.robheeney.com  Despite the random choice of  show, we ended up with a really good comedian.

Afterwards a few pints at the Bo bar, and then some fish and chips.

Guns N Roses

Filed under: music — stephen @ 9:21 am

Selina, Graham and I went to see Guns N Roses play at the Wembley Arena. The first band, Skid Row, started to play at 7.00. American Rock band, very anti George Bush and Tony Blair, kept referring to them as Tony Bush and George Blair. Next was Bullet for My Valentine, a British band who had been touring with GNR for the European Tour. AT 10.30 GNR started, and the place went wild, no one was left standing at all. The show ended at midnight. Axel Rose was taken ill during the show and did not perform the last set, with Paradise City. Instead front man Sebastian Bach from Skid Row performed. It was reported that the show almost did not happen. Axel had been advised not to.
