Cambridge Society Ironbridge Weekend

Blasdale Home Posted on May 10, 2003 by SteveAugust 8, 2017

We had a long weekend with the Berkshire branch of the Cambridge Society. Thirty-five of us met up for a visit to the Severn Valley Railway, and Iron Bridge.

First we met up at the Wenlock Edge Inn near to the market town of Wenlock. Had an excellent baguette for lunch and a pint of Hobsons. Afterwards there was a geological walk along the Wenlock ridge for the able people, and a visit around Wenlock and the priory for those not so able. I had to succumb to the leg and visited the priory.

Afterwards we went back and booked into the hotel in Telford, had drinks, dinner and a presentation of the local geology by Peter Worsley, professor from Oxford University.

The next day was a tour around Bridgenorth, highlights were the castle, as seen by Time Team, the church and the ride on the Cliff railway. Next it was on to the Severn Valley Railway and a tour of Country Park, led by a very articulate and enthusiastic guide who had set up the park.

Back at the hotel it was time for dinner, and then a talk about Ironbridge by Ken Jones, a guide and author of an Ironbridge book.

Sunday was a tour of Ironbridge; we started with the Coalbrookedale Museum of Iron and then Darby House. Abraham Darby was the first person to smelt iron with coke instead of charcoal. He started this in Coalbrookdale. Another Darby, Abraham Darby the Third built the first to build an iron bridge.

After this we went and walked over the Ironbridge, and then had lunch in Mrs Peacock’s Pantry.

The afternoon was spent in Blists Hill. This is a museum located on another mining and smelting site. The museum has also been set up to recreate a village. People recreating the feel of the house inhabited each house. These people interacted with the visitors, and in the shops also traded with the visitors. We visited here 10 years ago. It had changed over the time, and was well worth the visit.

Pictures and a full write up in a few weeks.

Much thanks to the organiser Catherine Side.

Cambridge Alumni Weekend

Blasdale Home Posted on September 30, 2002 by SteveAugust 7, 2017

Rosemary and I took a long weekend at the Cambridge Alumni Weekend. We left home at 6.00 am Friday so we could leave the car at the B&B and be at the first event at 9.30. The weather was kind the whole weekend.

Had a good tour around the new buildings of the university, seeing the new Mathematical Sciences Campus, and the William Gates building for Computer Sciences.

I had never visited the Scott Polar Research Institute despite being next to the Chemistry Laboratories. This was put right on Friday with an interesting talk about the research being carried out on the creation of new marine conservation areas at the Antarctic.

Rosemary had a good tour of the Archaeology and Anthropology museum where she got to hold ancient precious objects. Finally we met up and visited the Museum of Zoology where we had a tour behind the scenes.

A pleasant Friday evening was held in the Fitzwilliam Museum where we ate canapés, drank wine and viewed the paintings. Wonderful atmosphere and beautifully presented.

Saturday morning was dominated by hour long lectures:

  • The Universe: Theory and Reality
  • Anatomy of Art
  • Beauty and the Beasts
  • Climate Change
  • Iris recognition
  • The Molecule Hunt. Using DNA in Archaeology

The afternoon was spent listening to Chris Andrew talking about spies in Cambridge, and reflecting on the Hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Next it was a talk by David Starkey on Monarchy and Democracy. This was the Star Lecture and was very worth listening too. It was a very brief overview of the last hundred years of his up coming Television Series.

A quick trek from the Sedgwick site to the ACDC theatre. Here we enjoyed a one-man play by Julian Curry (Claude Erskine-Brown in Rumpole of the Bailey) on the history of wine. Very entertaining.

We had a very nice evening meal sitting outside, overlooking the Cam by Magdalene Bridge.

Sunday was basically two tours.

The first tour was of the Herchel Smith Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry, where we were introduced to Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Here they were using the MRI scanner to look at knee and finger joints, and their research is particularly relevant to arthritis research.

The second tour in the afternoon was to the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory. Here we were shown several of their radio telescopes. Some now not used, but many doing leading research. Some of the work is in designing and testing new ideas at the site, and then either building a better version or getting the Americans to build a larger version at a site more suitable for astronomy.

We saw the light telescope, which uses multiple telescopes mounted at a distance apart, which can thus synthesise a larger telescope. This was seen detail on the nearer suns. A larger newer one is being build in New Mexico where the weather conditions will be better.

A very good weekend.

The Cambridge Society, Berkshire Branch weekend visit to Chepstow

Blasdale Home Posted on May 10, 2002 by SteveAugust 7, 2017

We went with the Berkshire branch of the Cambridge Society to Chepstow. Arrived there on Friday evening for a pretty good meal in the hotel.

In the morning we walked from Chepstow to Tintan abbey where we had a pub lunch and a guided tour of the abbey by a bloke dressed as a monk.

Coach back to Chepstow and a tour of the castle just before it closed evening meal and then a concert with harp, vocals and pipes.

Sunday morning we took the coach to Caerleon, a very important Roman fort on the borders of Wales. Again had a guided tour of the site, amphitheatre, barracks and Roman baths. Sunday lunch at the Priory hotel.

Next into Cardiff, missing the Norwich/Birmingham football match traffic, to see the renovated docks and the barrage, with views of Penarth in the background.

Back home. Visit this site in a few weeks for a full write up and pictures
