Blasdale Home Posted on May 16, 2006 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

Flew up to Edinburgh on Easyjet from Luton on Monday..  Thought I was not going to make it..  At the airport the boards showed the flight has cancelled..  Joined the long queue to find out what was happening, only to be told 15 minutes later that the information board had been telling porkies.

Arrived on time, in the pouring rain.

Left on Tuesday in the pouring rain.

In between not alot to mention, did not go to Petit Paris, did not go to Whistle Binkies, did not go to the Burke and Hare or the Western Bar..

The good news is I will be there more in June.

Warwickshire

Went to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Warwickshire.? Mixed day, with some showers, and still very cold for the time of year.? No snow showers though.? Had the usual excellent lunch, with a lovely tender and well-cooked leg of lamb.? We had a lovely walk down the lane, viewing the flora in the lane banks, and commenting on the expense the council had gone to in placing gates and bridges on the ill used foot paths.? Back to the house for a cup of tea.

Norwich, Norfolk

Blasdale Home Posted on April 8, 2006 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

Turns out Graham has never been to Norfolk, so to cries of  Very flat, Norfolk  we set out with Selina and Graham for a week-end at Mike & Anns’ in Norwich. Could we disprove the Coward quote? Hedgerows all still looked very bleak, but a scattering of white (presumably blackthorn) on some bushes, so a hope of spring.

Arrived mid-morning in time for coffee at Unthank Road and a look around at the luxuriant orchid and other plants in their conservatory before setting off firstly to view Beccles. The river and sailing club at Beccles appeared largely unchanged; some very nice cruisers but some frightful motorboats, too. R had queried why an A for Amateur in Beccles Amateur Sailing Club, but that was told it was to be to do with the professionals on other parts of the river. The club’s 100th anniversary is due next year and all old members are invited back for regatta type celebrations. Lunch at Prezzo, an Italian restaurant in an ex-cinema in Beccles, very well designed with very interesting rustic bookcases. Came back past Waterloo and so diverted into the hamlet to admired Steve’s 25 year old plus car porch which is still standing. Admired Hassingham & Brundall Park railway stations which S had known in his long gone youth; much changed at H, no buildings! We used Reedham Ferry, a lovely chain link ferry over the Yare, with a hydraulic rise and fall system on its gates. Still run by the Archer family. We found a lamppost made out of chain links and wondered whether that was the old main chain or one used to raise and lower the gates. Watched a yacht come up to the railway bridge in Reedham itself. It had to wait until a train had gone over the bridge and then went through after the bridge had swung out of the way.

A leisurely & enjoyable lamb evening meal before bed.

Weather forecast not very promising but we were off after breakfast to visit a proper broad, Salhouse, where we could watch both river and broads traffic and a lovely selection of lovely ducks. Moss dog enjoyed racing around and having people to herd. We tried for lunch at Hickling broad, but just had a drink in the end. Watched house-martin/swallows chasing over the water, so another spring sound. We decided a visit to the coast was a must and raced past the wind turbines to bracing Winterton. Steve, naturally, managed to get wet trousers in the sea.

Back to Unthank for a lovely early supper of pork loin and salad. Drove back through sleety snow type weather in Woburn which had settled in the cars and grass to drop S&G at their house and then back home.

Edinburgh for three days

Blasdale Home Posted on March 8, 2006 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

Caught the early morning flight from Birmingham to Edinburgh on Tuesday.  Nice and early so missed all the dog owners going to the Crufts show at the NEC.  Lunchtime met up with Mary and Ed for lunch.  Pretty miserable damp day in Edinburgh, but lovely warm welcome at the Petit Paris where I indulged in a full three-course meal of

  • Lentil and Saucisse salad
  • Steak with a pepper sauce
  • Crepe au Citron.
  • Coffee

All washed down with a pitchet of Vin Rouge.

I was staying at the Apex International for the two nights, so made sure I got both of my free bath ducks each day.  They said welcome back.  I admit I have not been there for a while; the free Internet access at the Radisson is so welcome.

Thursday was a better day, weather wise at least.   During the evening I went to Whistle Binkies and ate at the Apex.  Not so indulgent, to offset last nights extravagance, but I really must stop eating Nachos .  Every time I eat Nachos I say never again.  I hate Nachos!!!!!

Thursday finished off at the back, having completed the evaluation.  Hopefully they will write a good report.  I ate lunch with Ed at the Café Royal, then back to Birmingham airport.

Est Est Est

Blasdale Home Posted on December 15, 2005 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

Friday, I was into work nice and early, not many others in until quite late.  Went for lunch at the Café Royal where I ate sausages and mash.  I had speciality sausages, very spicy, one quite hot.

I was not flying back this evening, as I was attending the departments Christmas lunch.  Started out in the Globe with a few drinks.  The place was absolutely crammed with people, and freezing cold because the doors had to be open, and the cold Northerly wind was blowing.  Luckily this was resolved.

Arrived at the West end of George Street at eight for supper at Est Est Est.  We were divided into two tables, had to wait quite a while for the wine, being severed by a rather dippy waitress who kept throwing her arms into the air. Not sure if this reaction  wasn’t brought on by Andy.  Later on we noticed people being served other peoples orders.  At least they got the steak right, when I ordered my rare steak, it was only shown the pan for a few seconds.

Night still young we walked back up George Street to a nightclub called the Candy Bar.  Here we talked and drank till throwing out time at 1.00.  Now we were down to three, we went in search of some other clubs, most had queues, or charged, so off we went to Whistle Binkies.  Christmas Friday night at Whistle Binkies costs money to enter and was packed.  Not sure I want to repeat the experience.

Stayed till the band stopped playing, but I quickly ducked out leaving Ed and Mary, and was back into the hotel before 3.00

Cargo

Blasdale Home Posted on December 14, 2005 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

Thursday was a cold bright day, worked the day on testing.

In the evening I was able to attend the banks Christmas party, which was in a nightclub, called Cargo over Toll Cross way.  Two story nightclub, all glass walls over looking the canals at the back. The walk was not too bad; I arrived several minutes after the start, meeting up with Neil and Danielle.   The evening passed in loud music, dancing and quite a few beers.  Usual culprits of Ed Aldridge, Mary Devine, Yura Usvyat along with lots of Walker contractors and bank people were there.

I left shortly before midnight, eating a Shish Kebab on the way home, dripping much of the sauce over my lovely tangerine coloured shirt.

Radisson

Blasdale Home Posted on December 12, 2005 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

After finishing the first job, I checked into the Radisson.  I was staying on to work at the bank for a couple of days.

The Radisson hotel welcomed me with an informal drinks party on Wednesday evening.  The idea was to meet all the other regular guests in the hotel, and award them with free drinks.  Talked to a few of the guests and had an enjoyable evening.  None of them though would accompany to Whistle Binkies where I watched a reasonable band.

The other Scottish company

Blasdale Home Posted on December 11, 2005 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

Started the week in Edinburgh, working three days with a Life Assurance company.  Travelled up early Monday morning on BMI Baby, met Chris Rooney in the lounge, but missed Yura who was flying on another carrier.

I met Clem in the Café Nero for a coffee and then over to the office for work.  Stayed in the Apex City those two nights, going out for a curry the first night and then the Mussel and Steak where I had mussels followed by Bass.

Norwich

Blasdale Home Posted on November 26, 2005 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

Worked at home most of the week.  It has been cold all week, with very little precipitation.  Friday was meant to be really stormy, but in the end did not affect us.  Believe the west country was badly caught out, with many children having to stay at school for the night.

I  started my course if vaccinations, in the belief i might be going to Saudi.  Visited the nurse twice in the week, going there again next week.

The weekend we drove to Norwich, and stayed with my father and Ann.  Went to Norwich to see a film (The persistant gardener), set in Kenya.   Bit of a problem getting there, traffic was bad, missed the  proposed start of the film, but it actually was not showing at that time.  Went around the shops, got caught by shopping center evacuations, and long queues in the coffee shops.  Back to the cinema to watch the film.

Gutworm

Blasdale Home Posted on November 16, 2005 by SteveDecember 27, 2017

Today, went out for a drink with Mary and Ed.  Afterwards I went to the Bongo Club.  Some metal bands were playing.  The Bongo Club is on Holyrood road.  Walk down Cowgate towards the parliament.  The road changes in to Holyrood, and on the left is the Bongo Club.

Reasonable venue, but rather cold, probably because there were only 30 or so there.  I reckon I must have been the only paying person, all the rest were from the bands and hangers on.

Should have started at 9.00, but did not start till 10.  Three bands played, ending at 12.30.

The bands in order were, Turbyne, Sweet Zombie Jesus and then Gutworm.

Turbyne, were young, but actually quite a good band.  Think there were 5 in the line up.

Gutworm were the older band and definitely the best.  Noise and metal at its best  The other bands definitely looked up to them.  They should be playing in Rushden on the 25th November and the White Swan in High Wycombe on December 3rd.  Well worth a visit.
